1) Could you share how your early professional experiences shaped your approach to talent acquisition and what eventually led you to join Framestore?

It is actually my experience of career advice at school and University that most influences my approach to talent acquisition! I was given such terrible advice by the adults in my life at that time and almost all of it has proved to be bogus with hindsight! A lot of what I do is to ask young people and applicants what THEY want from their future. Helping them to work that out for themselves is by far the best approach to them having a meaningful and positive career but also to them having the most impact and productivity in the workplace. Taking a coaching approach to talent acquisition is vitally important in my opinion!

Personally, I ended up at Framestore entirely by accident! I left University with still absolutely no idea what I wanted to do for a career. I graduated with a degree in English Literature, so wasn't qualified for anything vocational at all. As a result I was applying for general administration roles - personal assistant, receptionist etc. Unfortunately I wasn't having much luck so instead I took a checkout job at my local supermarket who then subsequently offered me the role of HR Assistant. It turned out that I really enjoyed working in HR but not in a retail environment and so I applied for other HR Assistant roles and ended up being offered the job at Framestore. And the rest is history as I have been here pretty much ever since!

2) What aspects of Framestore's company culture and values resonate the most with you and how do you communicate these to potential candidates?

There are several aspects of Framestore's culture that have had an impact on me and my career and that I value highly. The first is that it is a relatively flat organisation in the sense that everyone has the ability to be heard and to put forward ideas; innovation doesn't just come from specific job roles or levels in the organisation - it can and does come from anywhere. The second is that you can really make your own way in the company, there are no barriers to getting involved in things that interest you or to evolving your career. I have had all sorts of opportunities to dive into projects that interest me and my job has taken many forms over my time here. Finally, this is an environment where people share their knowledge and support each other to succeed. No-one is holding onto their hard won skills or talents - they freely share them with anyone who is interested to learn and that makes for a culture of collaboration and lifelong learning which I thoroughly enjoy.

There are many ways that we communicate our values to potential candidates but we have found that the most meaningful way is through interviews like this one! We have a whole series of interviews with our global team over on Medium that we call [FRAMED] where we share the absolutely awesome people who work here, their career journeys and what it's really like to work at Framestore! We also have a podcast that does a deeper dive into some of the amazing, innovative people who work for us around the globe, sharing their knowledge with the wider community. It makes so much more impact to hear these stories than for our recruitment team to simply 'tell' candidates what our culture is.

3) What innovative recruitment strategies have you implemented in the past, and how have they impacted your organisation's talent acquisition goals?

My biggest area of impact has been around entry-level recruitment. I have led the charge, not just for Framestore but for the whole industry, when it comes to apprenticeships, internships and outreach. For me it is so important that we are visible to young people and that we are changing their perception of what a job in the creative industries can and does look like but also that we are ensuring that our sector is open and inclusive to everyone - no matter who they are, where they come from, what they look like or believe. Making sure that our talent pipeline is diverse is crucial to our future success as a business, bringing in new ideas, approaches and solutions to the way we work. I was even lucky enough to be invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate my work in this area!

4) What unique qualities or experiences are you looking for in candidates when applying for roles at Framestore?

Framestore is a multi Academy Award-winning creative studio that combines creativity and technology to reframe the possible across film, content, advertising and immersive experiences. We have a team of over 3,000 storytellers and innovators in studios around the world. With that said, the most important qualities that we look for in candidates are their human skills. We will always prioritise team-work, communication and resilience (for example over specific experience with our software or tools which is much easier to learn on the job. We're not looking for 'leaders' in the traditional sense and we definitely don't rely on extroverts! In fact, a much higher proportion of our team are neurodivergent than in society at large. So it's totally fine to communicate or work with others in the way that suits you! We just need people who are enthused by what we do, keen to learn and who can be relied upon by others.
