Shauni Saelens

Talent Acquisition Team Lead

1) What motivated you to choose work and organizational psychology as your field of study?

My academic journey began with a strong interest in psychology and a strong desire to help others. As I progressed through the different courses, I discovered my focus on organizational psychology, which allowed me to apply psychological principles in a business context.

This field particularly resonated with me because it focuses on improving employee well-being and organizational effectiveness in a way that is less emotionally charged and more strategic than the more clinical psychology.

Through my internships, I came to realize that I prefer working within an international company where I can fully be myself and grow within a culture and values that match what matters most to me.

2) You mentioned that, in your experience, you’ve faced situations where there was a lack of alignment with the company culture. In your view, how important is cultural fit in the selection process?

I have indeed experienced a significant disconnect with a company culture. I’d say that cultural fit is a very important, of not critical, component of the selection process. I think that mutual discovery is important during interviews. It should be a priority to openly discuss our company's values and culture, as I feel it's crucial for candidates to be able to bring their true selves to work.

By providing this insight and checking what the candidate prioritizes, candidates are empowered to determine if a certain organizational environment aligns with their personal values and professional needs.

3) You also collaborate with the Recruitment Marketing Team: in your opinion, how has communication in recruiting changed over the past few years?

The collaboration between TA and recruitment marketing is more important than ever. I feel like communication has shifted from a one-way, reactive form to a multi-faceted, proactive, and candidate-centric conversation. It’s no longer just waiting for candidates to apply; communication starts long before a candidate applies and it continues even when a candidate doesn’t get the job.

We’ve also moved from a very general communication to personalizing and we’ve moved from one-way communication to a dialogue, like having a chatbot answer questions about the process or actively seeking feedback after the process.

4) What HR trends are you most interested in, and which ones do you think are transforming talent acquisition the most?

I love all things connected to innovation and automation so I’d say that the impact that AI has would be the one I’m most interested in but I also feel like it’s the one impacted TA the most.

We get to free up time to work on building human-centered relationships and working on our candidate experience. The impact that AI has on data and analytics allows us to work a lot more targeted and pinpoint areas in which we can change things up as well.
