Paolo Landini
Manager Courier Information Systems & CRM
1) Your academic journey took you from Italy to the Netherlands for your master’s degree. How did studying in the Netherlands influence your career path?
My career journey has been a fascinating adventure marked by diverse academic experiences, cultural shifts, and personal growth that have all contributed to shaping the professional I am today. I began my academic journey in Rome, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Ingegneria Gestionale at Università La Sapienza—a period that laid a strong foundation in my field and instilled in me an early passion for learning and innovation.
Eager to broaden my horizons and deepen my expertise, I then pursued a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering – Logistics at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Studying in the Netherlands was truly a transformative experience. The Dutch educational system, with its renowned emphasis on practical, hands-on learning, differed greatly from the more traditional, theory-heavy methods I had experienced in Italy. At the University of Groningen, we were encouraged to approach our subjects as experts right from the start.
Our coursework was built around real-world challenges, with assignments tied directly to industry problems. This approach meant long hours of preparation, often in collaborative groups, which not only honed my technical skills but also enhanced my abilities in teamwork, communication, and creative problem-solving. This enriched academic environment played a key role in shaping my global outlook and opened doors to opportunities that eventually led me to build a career in Germany—a country admired for its efficiency and structured work culture.
2) Moving from Italy to Germany, what were the biggest challenges you faced when starting your career abroad?
After completing my studies, I moved back to Italy, however, after 6 months, I decided to relocate to Germany.
This transition marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with its own set of challenges and exciting adjustments. Adapting to Germany’s work culture, for instance, was an enlightening experience. Here, there is a strong focus on efficiency and productivity during working hours. On the other hand, It is common to see offices quieting down after 6 PM, a clear sign of a well-defined boundary between professional responsibilities and personal life. This structured approach has allowed me to enjoy quality time with my wife and our beautiful little daughter Emma, even during weekdays.
Beyond adjusting to a new work rhythm, I encountered the well-known intricacies of German bureaucracy—a system that, at first, appeared to be an endless maze of paperwork and formal procedures. However, over time, you realize that it is messier than it looks like 😂
3) You are currently Manager Courier Information Systems & CRM at Just Eat Takeaway.com. Can you describe your main responsibilities and how they impact the company’s recruitment and operations?
Today, I am proud to serve as the Manager of Courier Information Systems & CRM at Just Eat Takeaway.com—a role that perfectly blends my passion for technology with the operational expertise. Within the Global Logistics department (Scoober) I am entrusted with overseeing the technology, processes, and communications that drive our Courier Recruitment Operations across 10 Countries.
My responsibilities span managing sophisticated applicant tracking systems, overseeing meticulous ID verification processes, and ensuring smooth, multi-channel communication—all with the goal of creating an efficient and user-friendly recruitment process. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is the opportunity to collaborate closely with the Product team, where together we continuously implement the latest technologies and refine our systems. Given that we hire couriers on formal contracts, the emphasis on precision and automation is non-negotiable; our aim is always to streamline recruitment to meet growing operational demands without ever compromising on quality.
Over time, I have witnessed firsthand how the integration of advanced technology can transform everyday operations—making processes more efficient, reducing errors, and ultimately delivering a smoother experience for both our recruiters and our couriers.
4) What advice would you give to young professionals considering an international career?
My advice to young professionals considering an international career is to embrace adaptability. Be open to learning new languages, even at a basic level, this will help you build better connections and understand the local culture more deeply. Be proactive in acquiring new skills can help you stay competitive.
One of the greatest benefits of working internationally is the opportunity to build a global network. The connections you make with people from different countries can open doors to exciting career opportunities and collaborations that you might not encounter in a single market.
Finally, understand that work-life balance can vary significantly across countries. It’s important to find a work culture that aligns with your personal needs and goals.
