1) Stuart, could you describe your career journey that led you to become a Global Director, Talent Acquisition Brand & Marketing at Workday? What motivated you to pursue this path?

My career journey has been a fascinating blend of technology, marketing, and talent acquisition. I came from a traditional digital marketing background working in the B2B space and getting early experience in the charity as well the entertainment sectors that aligned to my degree in Commercial Music.

I transitioned my career into Recruitment Marketing and Employer Branding at CA Technologies, where I quickly realized the power of employer branding in attracting top talent. I was drawn to the intersection of marketing and HR, and I saw an opportunity to make a significant impact on a company's success. This lead to leadership experience that landed me my role at IBM where I led the global delivery of our employer brand in market across the world. I’m now here at Workday and loving it. I always say that finding a niche is a great motivation for career path, and I’ve found that.

I find huge joy in humanising and personifying brands and landing it one of the oldest professions on planet earth in recruitment – and TA as a sector is in need of constant transformation which is always exciting.

2) In your role at Workday, what are some of the unique challenges you face and how do you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges is keeping up with the rapid pace of change in the technology industry. We need to constantly adapt our strategies to attract and retain talent in a competitive market. To overcome this, we focus on data-driven decision-making and continuous innovation.

Equally the post-covid working world has also seen so much more for us to tackle as talent teams and I would also say that thinking outside of the box when it comes to strategies – a lot of companies say the same things, the same way and we really need to cut through. One challenge geographically for us is Workday is a US-multinational so our brand still has space to grow internationally outside of the US, and that’s a challenge.

3) Can you share any innovative strategies or approaches Workday has implemented to attract and retain talents in a competitive market?

We've implemented a few innovative strategies. One is our focus on candidate experience and how this differs across differing skilled professionals. We believe that a positive employee experience is key to attracting and retaining top talent.

We've invested in tooling and technology to help us truly localise our brand, as well build upon our first every company EVP into the paths of what this then means for differing talent markets and profiles. Another strategy is our use of data analytics. We use data to understand our target audience and tailor our messaging and recruitment efforts accordingly.

4) From your experience, what advice would you give to a junior candidate looking to transition or advance their careers in companies like Workday?

My advice would be to be passionate about what you do, be curious, and be willing to learn. Networking is also essential. Build relationships with people in your field and seek mentors who can guide you. Finally, don't be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone.

Those are the experiences that will truly help you grow and succeed. I’d also get comfortable with not knowing the full path – try stuff and you’ll start to know what you like and dislike and then can make career decisions that will start to make your path more obvious.

If you’d told me 15 years after being accredited with a 2.1 in a BA degree in Commercial Music that I’d be a Director of Talent Brand for a Tech Giant, I wouldn’t have believed you – I thought I was destined for creative and marketing work in the music industry. Be open, learn, network and work hard and smart.
